Same Old Blues > Solo Lesson 2

Hello Folks,

This weeks lesson is on the second half of the solo for Same Old Blues. It's got some classic blues riffs that show the influence of BB and Freddy King both but it's pure Milton. I think Milton's guitar was sort of taken for granted a bit because his voice was so amazing. Nevertheless he was a great blues guitarist and his early sides show his blues prowess.

Have fun getting this solo down and send me some videos. Don't worry about playing just like him. If you choose to do that fine, if not that's good too. Just show me what cha got and give me a taste of your playing so I can hear how you are progressing.

Enjoy!

Duke

Please excuse the singing, Ab is not my key ;-)

Here's my progress with Same Old Blues.  I'm still having trouble with the final flurry of notes at the end of the solo, so I simplified

Hi Peter, I remember Sam's guitar work being similar but haven't heard it for years. Apparently he felt strongly about Milton's guitar playing! Duke

Hi Duke, recording in progress.

I just just listened to the other Background Listening versions, and was shocked to here Magic Sam play Little Milton's intro and solo almost note for note.

I assume that the intro and solo are improvised, and expected Magic Sam to do something very different.  However, it seems that he considered them part of the song.

Interesting...

That's great Charlie. You are definately getting the feel of it. Now you should try to break it up by going up to the high Ab for for a few licks to raise the intensity by the third solo chorus.Good job, Duke

Thanks as always for another great lesson on another great tune. I have the Magic Sam version but wasn't familiar with the Little Milton one before now - so thanks for turning me on to that as well!

Here's my cut - I can see where I'm not letting some notes ring enough, and I still have a tendancy to play too many notes (i think it's a fear that if i leave a space i'll never get back again - I hope i'm starting to break that habit!!!)
