Flying Home

Chords

Hi Folks,

This week we learn the chords and rhythm to the Benny Goodman / Charlie Christian classis 'Flying Home". Charlie Christian along with T-Bone Walker is one of the most influential guitarists of all time. He single handedly created the excitement about playing jazz on the electric guitar. All the early important jazz guitarists were from the mid and southwest. It's interesting to note they all had a lot of blues in their playing. Even the second generation like Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis played a lot of blues and the blues sound was a big part of their vocabulary.

I demonstrate a few ways to play the chords this week and talk about different versions of it. It's based on rhythm changes but the Benny Goodman version while basically rhythm changes refers more to a repeated descending bass line. The bridge is a 1-4-2-5 which is usually referred to today as a Flying Home bridge as opposed to a rhythm bridge (6-3-2-5). We will learn the melody or 'head' next week.

Enjoy, Duke

Is there a special way you stop the 5th string from sounding when you play seventh chords with your thumb?

Hi Tom, I mute the 5th string with the top of my index finger. Duke

The top of your first finger should touch the 5th string to mute it. Hope that helps. Duke

Steve, Very good feel here. My suggestion here wold be at the end not to double up the hits on the Eb just before the final Bb Eb at the end of the A section. It makes it sound Latin. It actually sounds like Sonny Rollins "Saint Thomas" when you do that. You you could play the last part in 4- 4.

Hi Mike, I think the tab is missing the final Bb7, like this...

Eb / Eb7 / Ab6 / B7 Bb7

Great stuff ...thanks Duke.  Is there any chance of some hollywood fats in the future? Red Headed woman/ Rock this house etc.

Also, some insights on how you get your sounds...do you usually go straight into the amp of do you use pedals?

Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Kind regardsTerry

Hi Terry, I will have to find my Fats CD. Yes, he was fabulous and got to play with him with Muddy Waters. I'll look into doing something of his.
