Flying Home

Introduction

Hi Folks, This week by popular demand we are learning the into I composed for the version of Flying Home I recorded with Herb Ellis. The first 8 bars are simple swing riffs all on the 1, then we play a diminished Arpeggio for 2 bars then resolve it with a two measure augmented arpeggio leading to the head.

Enjoy, Duke

Peter, Thats a good start. It sounds like you want to play it faster than your rhythm. You should try it a bit faster. Duke

Peter, Good question. In blues you can use it on the four chord. also in many progressions it works well on the one when going to a 2 minor 7 to 5. It would be 2 beats on 1 then 2 beats of a diminished scale going to the 2 chord. There ate many places a diminished can be used. Those a 2 examples. It makes a great passing chord in many places. Hi Duke, quick question about the dimished lick that ends this intro...

If I wanted to use it in other songs, or in a solo, when is it appropriate?  Over what sorts of chord sequences does it fit?  For example, would I use it over a ii V?

Hey other Duke students,

Are you bored with your metronome?  Here's something with a little more swing for practicing.

Hello Duke, welcome back, and Aloha (*jealous*)

Here's my progress on Flying Home.  I play it very slow, and try to stay in time.  This is actually the combination of 3 takes-- Intro, Chords and Head-- but I at least don't cheat and play them each completely.

I think this is the beginning of my next Open Mic effort.  Great tune!  Benny and Charlie have always been my very favorite

Peter

Good Job Steve! My only recomendation is that you make sure you take that pause going into the augmented riff. Otherwise you end up a beat short. Duke
