Solo Lesson 4

Hi Folks, This week lesson is on the last A section of the Flying Home solo. It's a fairly simple one (for a Charlie Christian solo) all the riffs are based on very standard fingering with nothing to confuse you or tie your fingers in knots! Just good basic swinging riffs to conclude the solo section. Enjoy and send us some videos!

Steve, I'm envious!

Unlike some of us, you don't need a privacy button.  For myself I gave up shame long ago ;-)

Shame aside, I actually find that doing the recording is where I do most of the learning.

I can practice endlessly on the couch, but the process of recording against a backing track forces me to understand what is going on.  For example, playing a solo or a riff against a backing track shows how the notes and timing interact.

But a song like this is definitely "drinking from fire hose".  I'm happy if I just get the chords, head and one or two licks

Thank you Mike

BTW, is there a privacy button or is Peter and I the ones who have posted on this lesson?

Hi Steve --- good question.  Everything is public --- just like a Masterclass.  That way everyone benefits from the interaction.  I've heard from a lot of people that they love seeing videos --- so thanks again for posting.

good! Threre are a few places where you need to work on the timing of the lines but in general it sounds really good. And the most important part is...... you swing! great job! Duke

Hey Duke

I finally got a chance to put the solo together. It's still a work in progress with respect to the timing but i am happy with my understanding of the basics. I still am not at the improvisatioin point yet.

Cheers eh.

Hi Steve --- you sound great!  It's cool seeing you bring it all together.

Hi Peter, Good try, some parts are sounding good. I have trouble with this one myself. I can improvise in that style but playing CC note for note is not an easy task. So that said, getting any licks you can add to your arsenal is a good thing. I'd say keep, working on it and more of it will seem natural after a while. I have a run through coming if it's not up yet and I would be embarrassed to say how many tries it took for me to even get close. A worthy challenge though for sure! Duke

Boy that tune was a lot of work, but sure was fun!  Definitely taking a drink from a fire hose...

Here's where I got to

Very nice lesson. How about teaching us to play "Big Boy" by Bill Jennings? Thanks Duke!
