Hi Dan, I'm getting behind on my lessons, but loving them. Here's a stab at Don't Get Around Much Anymore.

How's the kreol going. Is there a Haitian song in our future?

Dan Zanes
Dan Zanes Mar 23, 2018

hey there Jay!

you're sounding great, man! i can tell you've put some time into this one. good use of those C7 shape 7th chords. the opening riff on the G chord is solid throughout. and i LOVE the chord based solo!

if i were to offer something to help you move forward it would be get a little further inside the song which pretty much happens when you play it more. the singing is 10X more confident than the first video you sent my way and that tells me that if you keep this going you'll really emerge as a great singer in addition to the guitar playing.

also, maybe keep an eye on how the right hand is dampening here and there to add some sonic variation to the song.

good work here brother!

Hey Dan, the social music man.

this is another beautiful piece of music, with a whole lot of interesting ways to play around with it. i'll be working on this. thanks for the mention, by the way.

here's my feedback on your lessons so far: they're just great - great tunes, and really good ways to play them. i love those soulful solos. really feel like i'm learning a lot here on your site.

best regards,

jay

Hey There Jay!

Thanks Man, your feedback really means a lot. I appreciate hearing that this approach is connecting. In some ways I'm winging it but maybe that's because I never had a lot of formal learning along the way. I've been able to get a lot from the other teachers here at the Junction and the feedback certainly helps me stay on the right path.

Keep sending the thoughts and updates, your playing is really evolving and it's great to see it happen!! I like the way you're using these songs and lessons as a starting point for a strong style that's all your own.

Yr pal,

Dan

hi Dan, Oct 12 I posted a couple of variations on endings for Up Above my Head. if you have time to check them out, i'd be grateful for you feedback.

thanks

Hey there Jay! these are awesome. I played through them all and two things jumped out at me. One, your ears are definitely hearing the possibilities, and two, you've got the chops to really find your way through. I love that you went deep on this one! I think that once we unlock the secrets of these types of runs we can take huge steps forward as players. It's great to see you in this process. Do you have someone that you jam with sometimes? A lot of what you're doing now is great in a 2 guitar setting, too. Both as instrumental breaks and as a way to fill the spaces between vocal lines.

You can do a call and response song like up above my head and have the guitar play the response using 2 note riffs...just a thought if you want to go deeper. i might try that myself tonight and see what it would sound like....

thank you for sharing this with me Jay. You're really taking some big steps and I love seeing this unfold!!

My apologies for the delay in replying...

Your pal,

Dan

Hi there Corey. I'm really enjoying so many of your tunes. Here's a go at Sitting on Top of the World - looking forward to your comments.

Greetings Jay. Your tempo here is nice and steady. I can recommend that you try muting your bass strings a little with the heel of your wrist instead of letting all the strings ring out... experiment with what sounds good. Try playing with a quieter volume on the guitar and your voice won't have to work as hard to be heard. Also listen closely to the last riff that finishes the phrase. It sounds like you are ending it on a wrong note (It should end on the 'one'). Keep at it and thanks for posting.

thanks for the encouragement, Dan.

here's a vid with a couple of variations on endings for the tune. Hope you enjoy. There seems to be no end to what you can come up with. Such a great tune thanks for introducing us to it.

hey there jay!

i've been away performing and just saw this...really great, man!

i'm going to get my guitar out and take it apart. there's a lot here that i'd like to make sure i can play.

i particularly like the riff you play when you come back to the Dm chord, the one where you slide up 2 frets.

i really appreciate you going deep on this one. your working is paying off in a big way!!

dan

thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.

hey there jay!

damn...how did i not get back to you? this is awesome! the rhythm is super solid, the singing is right on too. and i love the licks you put in towards the end. i'd love to hear a whole solo verse with more of those, they really work well!

if i were to offer anything, i'd say hit the hammer ons a little harder so that they really pop out. they can make the guitar come alive and they're already there but i'd say get them so they're really hopping.

i really appreciate this, cousin. again, apologies for the delay!

having another go at this song, Dan, it's irresistable.

Dan Zanes
Dan Zanes Jul 31, 2017

hey there jay!

sounding great, man! it feels nice and steady, no slowing down or speeding up and the strumming is solid.

it feels like you're more inside the song now (and it looks like you've memorized the lyrics, that's a big part of this!). the more you play it the deeper you'll go!

i noticed you added some hammer-ons when you hit some of the bass notes on the G chord. i think you could add even more of those if you're feeling inspired.

thanks for sending this...it's great to see your progress!

Dan Zanes
Dan Zanes Jul 26, 2017

thank you jay! yeah, that collection blew my mind when i first heard it. i was learning to play 5 string banjo at the time and it felt like i was given a pair of wings. in these days of spotify and the rest it's just so easy to get ahold of the music. the human elemant can get lost in the process though. one of my first impressions of sonic junction was that it took electronic media and used it to bring the idea of human connection BACK to the music....so, i'm glad we're all here!
