Shivers > End of Solo & Shout Chorus

Hi Folks, This weeks lesson is on the last A section of the solo and the "shout chorus" or final chorus of the song. We start with a double stop riff repeated utilizing the 6th and 9th in the riff and end the last part of the final A with a Christian style riff to tie it up. Then we end the song with a riffing chordal triad that is extremely cool and very guitar oriented. I can't imagine this riff sounding good on anything but a guitar. Underneath the clarinet and trumpet play the original melody. It's a great end to a swinging tune. Looking forward to hearing you playing it with the track!

Enjoy, Duke Robillard

Hi Duke,

Here's my take on Shivers. I put together an arrangement based on the version you did with the New Guitar Summit. Thanks for the lesson and any feedback.

Hey Steve, That's great! Really nice lines and ideas there. You really have the feel, at times you fell behind the beat a little but it's not always easy playing with tracks. I'm really impressed with your note choices, great stuff, keep up the great work! Duke

Hey Duke, This will continue to be a work in progress for me but i feel i am making progress none the less. I had recorded a version yesterday but today went back over the lessons to produce this piece. There are issues with the upload so this piece was recorded using the direct method. That being said i feel its all there. Some your's some mine, I started by copying your phrases as best i could, then as i kept playing it i would add my own to it. A major step for me was hearing the changes while soloing. So here i am so far, some yours some mine.

Commnets welcome.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve, i would look at it as major scale in Ab for the one chord using some 6ths and ninths then flat the 3rd an use a blues scale in the same position for the four chord. Its 1 bar of 1 then one bar of. 4 back. And fourth. Hope that helps,  Duke

Thanks Duke,

Being a blues player for many years i'am not use to switching keys, And i likely don't play a formal blues scale. Fortunately I did study major scale and have always been able to maintain this in my playing, even in the blues. So I understand what you say. I'll definitely be working on this.

Cheers Steve

Hey Duke

I am not sure of the scales to use for soloing. I will try to go with Ab blues scale with -C over the bridge. Any suggestions.
