Sitting On Top of the World > Bass and Melody

In this lesson we will begin to work on "Sitting on Top of the World" by the great Mississippi Sheiks. I play my version of the song and then we dive into the fundamentals of this tune. I emphasize the importance of a light touch and the importance of the thumb and the bass line. This is a classic blues tune that is also the gateway to other similar tunes by many other artists (i.e. Tampa Red's repertoire).

Honor!

Greetings Chuck...It was great playing with the elder, like going back in time in a sense.  I have never played with somebody whose style literally came from before the blues.  It was like hearing the ancestors.  Powerful!  I'll never forget it.

Terrific tune and terrific lesson Corey,

How does the song differ from "You've got to move"?  Is it only the words?

Happy Holidays

Great tune Corey!  I love how there is kind of a call a response between the slide lines and the drone notes on the high E string.  I appreciate you taking the time to break down the bass --- as I realize it gives life to the tune.

The melody is a bit like You Got to Move --- right?

Thanks Mike...yes there are a few songs that are like this one.  Tampa Red wrote many songs that were similar to this one.
