Catfish Blues > Lesson 2

In this lesson we will focus on getting our bass rhythm together and learning the basic riffs of the song. Please remember to take your time and get the groove down BEFORE tackling the melody lines.  This is a simple song and doesn't need a lot to make it work.  Please send in your questions and comments/videos.  I look forward to hearing from you.

You have the notes down, now just work on the rhythm and you will have it!

LOL.. "...if you don't have that, you have nothin'..." - how painfully true...

Hey Corey, I was just wondering what model parlor guitar you are playing.

@Ben Jones -- Watch each of the four videos.  I slow down and isolate the bass line and then show how they fit with the melody riffs.  The best way is to learn the bass line first and play along with the videos that I have posted of the song.  Listen to the melody while just playing the bass and nothing else to get it in your head.  Then you can try to play them together.  Remember to go very slow at first.  Thanks for your question and sorry for the delay.  Please contact if you have any more questions.  THanks.

How do you play the bass notes and the riff at the same time?

@Craig Dickerson...thanks for your comments.  I am glad that you have found sonic junction and hope that it continues to be useful and inspiring.  I look forward to seeing your video.  I use light guage D'addario strings on the parlor guitar.  Ok be well and see you on the site again soon.   Thanks.

hi corey, i just want to say that i was in a real bad place emotionally...i'm from south carolina but have been living in east germany for the past two years, and it's been rough...but i just signed up and your music has inspired me in a way i haven't been inspired in a long time.  thanks for that, and for being willing to teach and share your gift...that's great!  i'll be postin' a video soon...i spent the last few days getting the basic groove down and now i'm workin' on these licks from lesson 2.  take care!...oh, by the way, i have one question for you:  what kind of strings are you using on that parlor guitar?

@ Mike...that's great news. I like the term spinal. Glad to hear that it is working out. Hit me up anytime...I have finally found an internet connection here (just before I am about to return home). Stay cool.

Hey Corey .. really enjoying these riffs.  I'm practicing them for 10 minutes each day and they are starting to become spinal.  Love the feel of the song and will be using these licks for a long, long time.  Thanks!
