44 Blues > Lesson 2

In this lesson I play the tune at a much slower pace so that you can hear what is going on. I encourage you to spend a lot of time just playing the main riff and getting a good feel for the rhythm of the tune. I also talk about some licks that can help make the song more interesting. Good luck.

Hi Corey, I have just joined sonic junction and look forward to learning from you throughout the year- what a privilege it is to learn from you. I'm starting with 44 blues. Looking forward to any comments for this and in the future to help me improve.

Thank you!

Sounds good so far...from what I hear here, you have almost got it.  Try playing the bass at the same time that you play the main riff, instead of alternating.  This will make your playing sound fuller.  Thanks for posting.

That's helpful Corey- thank you. Your lessons are great and are keeping me motivated to play.

At 7:36 you do some kind of of little stutter in the baseline (in the A to the E walk of the turnaround).  I can't for the life of me figure out how you do it.  Even with slowing it down.  That is the coolest little effect!!!!  It seems like there's a couple brushes and a mute in there?

Greetings Joe...yes that's right...it is a brush with a slight mute.  When I brush I am using my index finger....

Hi Garrick ... Mike here, I do the tab for Corey's lessons.

If let me know the timecode of the riff you are looking for, I can tab it for you.

Thanks.

Do you have the tab or the video breakdown of the transition from the main riff into the A riff?

Mike this is the best video ever uploaded here in sonic junction....father and son..wow!!! :DD Next time, if possible I'd like to see both in the video.....:)))

why don't your son try to play some kind of african drum behind you? I mean djembe or pumpkins....that is the kind of percussion I think is played on 44 blues :)))

OK .. here's where I'm at on 44 Blues.  Loving the tune.  I still need to learn the B7 transition (which is awesome Corey!). My son is playing the drums with me on this one.

Hy Mike....thanks!!!! I'm workin on the b7 too!!!! Upload a video soon, please!!1 :DDD

@Alex .. Awesome!  Congrats on getting all the riffs down ... I'm still working on the B7.  One thing I noticed about Corey's version on his album is how the percussion ads to the emotion of the song ... I'm experimenting with a heavy foot beat as I learn the tune.  You're ahead of me as usual !! :-)

@Corey ... this version on Mississippli to Mali is totally immersive ... feel like you're taking me on a journey to another place.  Would love to hear you talk sometime on how you do this.  I got the same feel on your version of Catfish blues from last year.  Amazing.

@Corey....I'd need an advice if possible....the guy who is organising the blues fest at Nureci called me proposing to play behind to others while they are reading poems I thinks....and obviously play something by myself too....anyway I've never done a thing like this....how do you suggest me to prepare for this kind of show? I'm not very good in doin instrumental music....should I for example just go to youtube and give a look at videos with somebady reciting and play on it?!?!?!!?!?

I'm doing this the 16th of August too....Are you goin to play also some tunes in solo or just with your band? :))

@Corey...my second attempt :))

Hi DaddyRay .. yes, I think there is an issue with the way it is being posted.  Can you email me the video at mike @ sonic-junction.com ... and I will insert it in.  Thanks!

ps.  always tricky for me to record too

daddyray (robbie)

okay Mike..let's see what I've left where.....I tried to post here then I think I may have tried to delete that...then I posted a very brief run through on the page for the first lesson of this...I am not happy to record myself so the lag gives me time to regret posting (I get too edgy when I know I am recording)

Hi DaddyRay .. sorry for the confusion .. it takes a couple minutes for the video to transcode .. so just upload it and come back to the page 5 min later.

Looking forward to seeing it!

I've been working on the tune too and will upload a video in the next couple days.
