Duke Robillard Lesson >

Mood Indigo > Melody - 2nd Section

Hi Folks,

This week we are learning the second melody section which is single string melody after the chord melody section. This part was originally Harry Carney's clarinet part in the original Duke Ellington version. A simple but beautiful thing. In one part I play a descending line on the B string while the line on the G string ascends. It's a fun a beautiful thing to play and I think you are going to have a ball playing this one!

Enjoy,

Duke

Revisiting this in honor of the Duke's birthday (the other Duke, the guy who write this beauty : ) Lovely lesson and great playing - literally had a 'WOW' moment at one of the lines you played! Using lockdown to dig deeper into SJ, especially the heavyweight numbers like this one : )

By the way Duke, I think the swing thing is finally kicking in for me. I'd love to hear what you think of this one if you get a chance! Best, Bruce

HI Bruce, That's great! My Romance right? Great tune. You sound better all the time on these tunes. Keep up the good work! Duke.

Thanks, Duke! Yup, that's "My Romance". I started learning 2 or 3 Real Book tunes like this each week: melody, chords and soloing, and then I play the ones I've already learned in my daily practice, kind of like playing down a set list. Learning the melodies is a tremendous help to me. A good melody always teaches me some new way to look at the guitar. Thanks again, Duke. It really means a lot to me, getting your feedback on my efforts.
