Glide On

Head

Hi Folks,

This week we are learning the head for Glide On.  There are some interesting accents and stretches that are a bit hard, but I'm confident you will get them. It's a really great example of jazzy blues.  Simple but very cool and the use of the flat five in the melody makes it a great choice. Within the context of this tune you can do an awful lot of jazz flavored things that add more harmonic substance to the blues. It can be a great way to enhance blues tunes and bluesy ballads. I will demonstrate some thing for you to try that you may not think of for the blues like major 7ths etc.

Enjoy,

Duke

Hi Duke! I put in some extra practice on this one after seeing the fine work from Marty and Steve. I did notice that this melody begs to be played too fast, so I made myself do it with a metronome at your tempo. The timing of that descending lick is really interesting! I'm trying to stick as close as I can to your phrasing, because it's a bit tricky. I love this head, it keeps playing over and over again in my mind. Definitely a great tune to play on gigs! Thanks for it. And I dig the chapeau! ;-) Bruce

Hey Steve, Sounds great and so does the tele! My only comment is watchout for the timing on the desending lick at the end of the verse. There is very specific timing and hits there to make it all fit in time. Playing along with my version should make it easy to get. Also, don't rush the tempo, its a slow groove, thats what makes it Glide On.........you've got the basic head down, great playing! Duke

Thanks Duke, and yes, if i had played along with your track there wouldn't likely be a timing issue.

And i see you are favoring that Casino, sounds great as well.

Thank you everyone for your comments, We will be working on some cool riff coming up for this tune. Bill Jennings and Billy Butler (with Bill Doggett) are two of the most melodic blues players ever. It's so cool that you guys appreciate the value in this stuff. It's not the "today" sound but in my opinion, so much hipper. You can't beat mixing jazz phrasing with blues feeling. At least to me you can't! Duke

This is such a great tune! It's so much fun to watch the video of your performance of it after watching the lesson. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow! Thanks, Duke. Best wishes for continued recovery.
