Don't Get Around Much Anymore > Chords, Rhythm and Soloing

Greetings Guitar players and New Years Greeters!

Here we are once again in the happy land of Social Music with the Duke Ellington classic “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.” In this lesson we’ll examine a few different ways of playing some chords in the key of G - including E7, Am, C, Cm, and D7. This song can be played with open chord shapes but we’ll spend most of our time up the neck with closed chord shapes. We’ll also take a look at some bass runs (of course!) that can enhance the tune and lead from one chord to the next. And what about a solo section? Yes! Naturally we’ll work out a chord based instrumental section. As always, we’ll be looking at this as a song that’s fun to play and sing but also a way to learn some tricks and tips that can be applied to other songs you decide to take on. There are most certainly some jazz singers in your circles and they’ll be grateful that you have this one in your song bag…Let me know how it goes, people.

Happy Musical New Year to you all!!

Hi Dan, I'm getting behind on my lessons, but loving them. Here's a stab at Don't Get Around Much Anymore.

How's the kreol going. Is there a Haitian song in our future?

hey there Jay!

you're sounding great, man! i can tell you've put some time into this one. good use of those C7 shape 7th chords. the opening riff on the G chord is solid throughout. and i LOVE the chord based solo!

if i were to offer something to help you move forward it would be get a little further inside the song which pretty much happens when you play it more. the singing is 10X more confident than the first video you sent my way and that tells me that if you keep this going you'll really emerge as a great singer in addition to the guitar playing.

also, maybe keep an eye on how the right hand is dampening here and there to add some sonic variation to the song.

good work here brother!
