Off the Wall

Eighth Chorus Breakdown

This week we tackle the eighth and last chorus of "Off the Wall." This should be played with a light touch except for the last phrase. This contrast is more apparent on Walter's version. I break this chorus down phrase by phrase in discrete "bite size" sections. At this point, you should be able to clearly hear the tongue slaps and other nuances of the attack as well as find the notes in the melodic line. You can watch my cheeks and see where I'm playing a blow note. No training wheels on this, as far as a hole by hole explanation. You should be able to recognize all the sounds by now: the seventh chord for instance( the 2/5 draw), the tongue slaps and octaves.

This is one of the great masterpieces in the blues harmonica canon. If you can play this in a flowing, swinging way from start to finish you can really be proud of yourself, and I will be too!
