This week we’re going to look at the B part of my arrangement of Last Thing on My mind, which uses a capo at the 5th fret in order to get some different sounds. The nice thing about using a capo up high is that you can sometimes create the illusion of playing a different, higher pitched instrument. In this case, not only do I have the capo fairly far up the neck, but I’m mostly playing on the high strings of the guitar. This is a go-to technique when playing with another guitar player or other instrument so that you can each occupy your own sonic territory and avoid stepping on each other’s toes. But it can also be nice in a solo arrangement to pull a different flavor out of the guitar. In this case, I was having fun hearing the guitar playing polyphonically (that is to say, playing more than 1 note at a time) but way up high. Give it a try!
Happy Holidays and best wishes for a Happy New Year!
