Crawlin' Kingsnake

Last Vocal Verse

Hey, Sonic Junction.

This week we're doing the last vocal verse, and the first half of the outro verse. The harp on the vocal verse is pretty much stuff we already went through when we did the previous vocal verse, so I get into explaining the lyrics a little bit, in case somebody's not sure exactly what the lyrics are, or what the story's about. You always want to know what the song's about. Even if you're not the one singing the song. If you are accompanying the singer, it can only be helpful to understand the message and the attitude of the song. When we get to the first half of the outro verse, we start out with the signature theme lick, and wind up "leaning into" the IV. The impression of "leaning" is achieved with some aggressive timing and some well placed bends.

As you know by now, this series isn't about licks - It's all about groove and feel - Phrasing, timing, tone and texture are the important keys to musical feel.

Nasty lyrics! A female singer friend suggests keeping the number of songs involving snakes to one per performance 😉

Thanks, Gordi - I'm real glad you enjoyed the series. The little things, the nuances and subtleties, can certainly make a big difference in the overall effect.
