@Corey...while you were doin the sound check I was here makin some music for this reading :DD....Devil Got My Woman went really usefull ^__^...Don't know why but to me songs in minor tuning fit well with the voice of Jadel...

Then I read your comment. You say yourself that guitar sounds better compared to the voice (and this is undisputed) but at the same time I should try to help me with the guitar and working on it, I'll have results in the future. and then I see a big difference of human approach by the two of you and it makes me smile as one who plays the blues and has achieved little targets has the arrogance to use  so bad words compared to an accomplished musician who constructively criticise and indefinitely encourages his students. And that makes me smile and give me a positive example. Thanks a lot. :)

Anyway My girlfriend and me are waiting for you here in Sardinia. We're so excited. You'll have great time here. The place is fantastic! If you have 5 minutes we would love to meet you. We've got a  present for you. It's really a small thing. Don't worry! :))

See you soon

@Corey...thanks for your precious words and advices. you're totally right. My singin is weaker compared to my playin the guitar that off course still needs a lot of pratice. To sing is for sure my Achille's heel. I started doin it maybe just because it was necessary for the giggs as I play solo. So it's many years that actually I'm workin on it and I improved a lot. You can't imagine how I was I think 6 years ago...:p Vey funny for sure and I also discovered that many of my discordant notes with the voice were mainly due to the lack of correspondences between voice and guitar  rather than dissonances of only my voice.  But I think I have also problems with pronunciation. I realized that with a better pronunciation the singin sounds better. It 's all connected to the success of the song, right? I would love to take some lessons but they are very expensive. Also read your words made me smile and think. When seven years ago I decided to start playing in the clubs I used to talk a lot with a famous local blues player and told him I wanted to play Delta Blues and sent him some recordings to have feedback and advices. Now he has become famous in all Italy and has participated to International blues Challenge in Memphis. He told me that my guitar playing was quite good  but the singing was deficiatario. So the beggining was almost the same but He added that I have to respect the tradition, I was tone deaf, and between the lines that maybe it was better not to play in the clubs. Basically he tried to discourage me but he didn't succeeded.

@corey....some kind of work in progress :)

Alex Barbera
Alex Barbera commented on: Devil Got My Woman Lesson 3 Aug 04, 2012

@Corey....thanks for the suggestions about finding our own way in respect of the song...I think this is a very crucial advise in general for having a good life...it's like sayin that you have to respect the others but at the same time yourself, otherwise is very difficoult to build our own identity..It's a process that belongs to the human being. So in my opinion it's important to look what other people do, take example but not aways replicate or do exacly otherwise we could become, rudely sayin, sheeps with all my respects for sheeps that are so lovely animals....We have a lot of them in Sardinia :DDD So for me words are never too much when you talks us about also philosophical things, attitude, approach and advice in general exacly because music it's not only technique but also spirituality. So respect the others but at the same time yourself. I'm often able to do this in my everyday life but in music it's really hard for me because as a "musician" I've always studied other people songs and had a lot of troubles in findin my own way. So, in this respect, I feel now musically really like a teen agenr of 17 yrs old.:DD I've tried to sing a blues in italian based on Eric Bibb's version of wayfarin stranger. It's not nice, it's really funny, It makes you a little lough but it's a beginnin. So, at least for me, it's very important if you encourage us, even many times, in tryin to do our own version without forgettin to learn  your version and others etc...

Just a request if possible about right hand in the next lesson or later. As you prefer. We don't have time limits. I've noticed that in several skip tunes (like special rider blues) you play with only two fingers like he used to do and Ali Farka Tourè too...I'm interested , if possible, if you could talk us more about it :))

Talk to you soon! :))

@Corey...the only thing I can do with my hands, and I do it well, is cooking...:DD Too difficoult to build an amply even if I'd like to be able to do this manual things. I'll look for a cheap one but I think I'm gonna start without nothing and see how much money I can collect otherwise I can take Muddy's example :DD

Your words also reminded me an interesting article I read yesterday about the book of  the early life of Jimy Hendrix....He and his brother were listening to some music on the radio and Jimi started to open the radio, separate all its components and at the end he tried to put all together but he didn't get the result. When his dad went back home bacame really upset with Jimy for what he has done...He replied that he was lookin for the music...:D Don't know if it's true, but it's a nice story :)))

@Corey...thsnks! :) I've heard al lot of his version of Devil Got my Woman but like you, I prefer the older ones...I think that in the old recordings he was even darker and obscure than in the newer ones...

About Skip...I like a lot also this tune..

Pignose has just replied about my question of shipping cost...it's 106$...I don't want to spend so much money...then I'll try with my guitar only :))

@Mike...It works with batteries right? It doesn't have a rechargable battery ..This is the main problem.I'd rather prefer to have it. I'd like to avoid spending too much money in batteries....It has a total output of 5W. Do you think it's enough to play in the street? :))

I wait for your video with singin too. I'm tryin to find the word to sing it in Italian :)

@wAngalik.....thanks for the video :)

@corey...here's my last attempt

also one more question if you or anybody else could help me....I was lookin for a battery power amplifier...microphone and guitar...it's for buskin. I've read good recension about PIGNOSE in general and of ROLAND CUBE STREET too...what do you think about them? :)

Alex Barbera
Alex Barbera commented on: 44 Blues Lesson 3 Jul 26, 2012

@Corey I was thinkin to play tune 1/2 or 1 tune lower....It's to high for me....I am also lookin for to find the key to play blues in Italian and I discovered that cut the words in Italian instead of singin exacly the way they are it sounds a little bit better...The only problem is that maybe you can understand nothing or at list little of what I'm sayin but as far as I understood it was even hard to understand the lyrics of old blues of the Delta...this is what my american friend told me...

Thanks for your feedback....See you soon!! :))

This has been the best part of the concert....We were all sitting on the floor but in a certain moment everybody standed up when Habib started playin a think a traditional malian song

Alex Barbera
Alex Barbera commented on: Devil Got My Woman Run-Through, Rhythm and Bass Jul 26, 2012

@Thanks Corey....I will upload soon a new video of catfish blues,too!!...I've met Habib Koitè (he played in duo with Eric Bibb)last sunday and listened to that wonderfull tune called Foro Bana and I could listen many similiraties in the sound and scales with yours Catfish blues. I've seen also him muting the string with his pinky finger and I thought.....wow, this is exacly what Corey has teached us!!! And this made me think about how powerfull music is and internet too....It came from Mali, then went to the states and after to me to Italy again with the example in live of HAbib,too!!...I don't know if he taught it to you (I've seen the doc of Martin Scorsese and your  conversation with him) or if you learned it walkin in the streets of Bamako, but there's must be a strong connection. So my new idea was to make a kind of mix between Catfish blues and Foro Bana addin some kind of Flamenco flavour....this is the idea I've got in my mind in general to find my personal sound...play the guitar like a drum...I'm a former african percussionist. :)) And I was impressed also by Mama Kana, his drummer....I think the instrument is called Kalabasa...He is very talented but what I really appreciated was that he was smiling ALL the time...You could see his white teeth from 1 km far!!!ahahaah :)))

@Corey....thanks....I need to study your version better...the intro I do, I think it's reversed to yours. It's a classic arpeggio from up to down, while what I like in yours is that it starts from the bottom and it finishes up, isn't it? Actually i've tried so many times to play Skip James. I like that slide that you can find in so many tunes of Skip. A part from the guitar, which for me is tough, the singin part has always been something impossible. I always wanted to be able to sing Devil got my woman but I never suceeded. I can do something with cypress grove and special rider, but this is too difficoult. So I'm happy to try again now. It's a big challenge for me!!

@Daddyray....thanks man!!! Please post a video as soon as possible!!! Keep on bluesin'. Alex

@Corey....thanks for teaching us this wonderfull tune!!! I always loved it...It's so unique Skip James style...I'd like in the future to be able to sing the way he does...I love Falsetto!!! I've tried to do something in the past...Here's where I am...I'm happy to study your version now!!! :)))

@Mike....you're the best, as always!!! :))

Alex Barbera commented on: 44 Blues Lesson 3 Jul 12, 2012

@Mike...you are the man!!!!! :DDDDD...great video...I like it and I like the timber of your voice which is in my opinion the most important thing for a singer...I mean on the rest we can work on but the timber should be what nature has given to us....There's many white that try to sing like blacks with bad results...We are white and our voice is white..no way..I like how Clapton sings because he doesn't force his voice...mabye sometimes he does but in general I think he doesn't...your timber has a nice colour..really...I'd love to have a deeper timber but unfortunately mine is preatty kind of high...a teacher told me that I'm between baritono and tenore :))

Anyway...no worries...I'm not a singer too..anybody could hear it..So I make a lot of mistakes but doesn't matter.. I can imagine Corey shakin his head and put his hands on his dreadlock and say....but where want to go this white man tryin to play the blues?!?!?!?!!?!?ahahaahahah..just kiddin...

Comunque, We only have to work on it...It's another instrument with a hole range of different sounds that maybe we can't imagine...We have so much potential inexpress...For this reason I make a proposal...Why don't you add a section also for sing the blues...ahahaaha Yes, mabye it's too much!!! :)))

@Corey....no worries!!! When you have time, we are here...I knew you were in Africa :) Now  We're waiting for you here in Sardinia. We are all so excited!!!!I'm happy that finally you are coming here and I'll promise you, you will really have a good time here..:) You will also eat very well...Are you vegetarian or you can eat meat??? Also close to Nureci, up to the mountain, there a natural statue called "mother goddes"...I don't now if you are interested to watch it...It really look like to that african woman that rapresent the birth and prosperity!!!

Plus Keb is playin the 12 of july  in Sassari,Sardinia...it's the place where I was born but now I'm livin in Bologna...I can't believe it..I can't go back right now. It's too expensive..:((

Alex Barbera commented on: 44 Blues Lesson 3 Jul 09, 2012

@Mike...I'm not a singer too!!!! :DD...I try but I should study more and also the pronunciation is a big handicap for me which is normal because english is not my mother language but there's other italians that play the blues and they have a really good pronunciation....I'd love to play some blues in italian but it's really difficoult...it's a big challenge for every italian artist...many have tried but in my humble opinion with very poor results...the lyrics sounded really banal...If I could do something interesting and I'd found an agency that believe in this project I could make a kind of boom in Italy because it would be something new here...but I'm not a genius, a Mozart, Chopin and Corey too...I just like to play something with my guitar, feel better when I do it and hopefully one day have enough skills to share my knowledge with others...I'd love to teach and tell over young peopla that to feel good they don't have to take drugs or drink alcohol...There's something more interesting...This is really important for and it's an aspect which makes a musician a really good musician...

anyway take a look at this guy...he's really good playin the blues..It's not one of my fav but....
