Mr. Lee's Mambo

Third Chorus Breakdown

The lesson this week is on the 3rd verse of Mr. Lee's Mambo". Although this 3rd verse is pretty simple, it does feature some small articulation challenges. It's also a really good example of something I addressed in last week's lesson - Last week I think I called it "the illusion of order". That means making (apparent) sense or "saying something" with your playing. Often making musical sense involves repetition, variations on that repetition and departure from that repetition featuring some element of surprise.

So, have fun, stay in the groove and keep the questions and comments coming.

Rick

Hi Rick !! it s not that easy to make the right bend on the 3 hole with confidence ... but it s cool ... when it s done right , i d like to have your comments ...

Hey Andre - I think you're doing good! The only thing I noticed is on that last lick, you're climbing up from the 3 draw to the 5 blow. I skip over the 4th hole and go straight from the 3 draw to the 5 blow. Otherwise, keep working on feeling that groove and you'll be doing great.

Hey Rick !! I m getting to the concept thing , " the statement "  ; the statement on the I chords and  put the same statement or extend on the lV and the V , do you that I had no idea of "statement " nor I , IV , V , I was just playing by heart , but now to understant that  'concept ' make more sense to understand at least the pattern , hope my explanation it s clear ?!!

I think I'm understanding you Andre - and if you're saying what I think you're saying, yeah, that's what I mean! I think of it like talking - like a conversation.

This is my 3rd chorus "version", if you can comment, It's so usefull for me and I'll be happy (even if you say It's bad), Thanks Mr Estrin

If you go back to the comments about 1st chorus lesson, You'll see (in plus than hear!) I made efforts to use your advices as far as I can...

Good job Thomas! All the licks are correct and you're getting good definition and articulation on the 2 draw! The only thing I'd suggest would be to focus a little more on the time of the little chords in between the licks. You're putting them in the right place, but in order to help those chords groove a little better, you need to pay attention to how long each chord is, and how sharply to cut it off.

Yes! I listened to your new recording of the first chorus (or verse) - Much better. My suggestions would be, try to play the the 3 blow a little softer and more casually. It's really a ghost note, so it shouldn't be emphasized as much as the 2 draw. My other suggestion would be to listen closely to places where I'm leaving spaces between the notes. The spaces help to keep the groove. And yes! Overall, much better!
