Fattening Frogs for Snakes

Second Vocal Verse Breakdown

Hey Sonic Junction - Rick Estrin again - This time with the third verse of Sonnyboy’s “Fattening Frogs For Snakes”. As we’re making our way through this piece, each week I’m continuing to try to give you more insight into the importance of groove and texture in our efforts to infuse our harp playing with maximum buoyancy and vibrance. Work on mastering and really feeling the little fills in these vocal verses.

Those fills hold the keys to bringing your harp playing to life.

Rick

One thing you do that seems little but so important to that "official" sound is, at the end of every little phrase there's a momentary quiver, a brief vibrato maybe, where the note hangs. And it really emphasizes the shuffle groove. So nice! I love when I have time on a Sunday to dig into this stuff!

Keep working that aural microscope! - I had to go back and listen myself to hear exactly what you were referencing. Noticing, figuring out and incorporating the little stuff is what most players overlook.

I'm definitely appreciating the details and the little variations. Keeping the groove going during the vocals is also tricky because this song is wordy and has some awkward consonant combinations. SBW2 was a master of self accompaniment - you've really captured it.

Thanks Bill - SBW2 was definitely a master at accompanying himself. I do what I can. Stick with it. Continue to develop that inner-metronome. You have a good, natural groove - Just keep on cultivating it.
