Same Old Blues > Solo Lesson 1

Hi Friends,

This weeks lesson is on the solo for Same Old Blues. We are going to learn Little Milton's solo chorus just as he played it on the original recording. Lots of great licks here and he plays in a familiar but unique style with lots of cool subtleties. Although Milton's style was based on BB King's he had an element that was all his own. This is a great chorus and it's lots of fun to play. This week we tackle the first half of the chorus.

Enjoy, Duke

Hi Bruce, Thanks so much, Little Milton's lines sometimes are difficult to play for me and I had to re-learn and pratice this a LOT to get it down right. So don't feel bad about how long it takes. The main thing that you are starting to hear what it's about and feel the phrasing. That great and I know you get a lot out of it. Thanks for your kudos! Duke

Hi Duke. It really helps a lot that you used a metronome on this. For same phrases, I had to go through the half-speed view over and over again, and carefully mark on the transcription where all the beats fall in order to understand how to hear and play it. As I finally started to "get it", I was bowled over by the exquisite subtlety in your playing, and it's only in attempting to cop your part exactly that I began to feel it in my fingers.

I'd hate to tell you how many hours I've put into this in order to get it note for note as you demonstrate, and not just the notes, but all the timing and phrasing. But I can't tell you what a difference it's made in my playing. I feel a sense of confidence and "in the groove"-ness that I've never felt on guitar. I hope that confidence will show when I've got it solid enough to make a video. There's one lick in the latter half which is tough for me to pull off (being that it's the lick with two pull offs in a row - the first at the end of bar 10 and the second at the beginning of bar 11, where it goes back to the I) at full speed.

But I'm just amazed how great it feels playing this.THANKS!

Bruce

Hey Duke

Great song. Here i am attempting to pick up on Little Milton's syle rather than doing it note for note. I have kept some of what i think are key phrases tho.

Cheer

Steve
