Rock Me Baby > Solo Lesson 3

Hi Folks, this weeks lesson is a succession of riffs that are in the basic BB King style you can use in Rock Me Baby. There isn't a solo per se, but more a collection of some of my favorite riffs for you to use in a third chorus solo. I really hope you all post videos of a few choruses of solos for me to check our and see your own interpretation of my lessons on this one. Come on now, don't be shy, let's hear you wail the blues!

Enjoy, Duke

Hey Duke! I'm so excited to share this one with you. I'm really pleased with how it came out. It's really nice to be able to say that, Thanks a lot, Duke.

Hi Bruce, Sorry it took me a while to get to this but man you sound great! I know relaxing at a slow tempo can be hard but you nailed it! My wife ask me who was playing as I was checking it out and was surprised it was a SJ student. She thought it was a record! And she's a a big a music fan as me. So kudos for the great playing! Nice sounding Les Paul also!

Wow, thanks so much, Duke! I'm totally blown away by that. I would never have made all this progress in my playing without Sonic Junction.

I *love* my LP! It's a '75, but made with full size humbuckers like a Standard, even though the neck says it's a Deluxe. I bought it last November when I was playing it in a shop and vibrato started coming out of my fingers. I'd never been able to play vibrato before, so I thought, "I'd bettet get this guitar!"

Anyway, thanks again for the kind remarks; they really means a lot to me.

Take care,

Bruce

Duke, thank you for your feedback. Your wisdom is much appreciated. I'll work on relaxing the beat like you say.

Hey Peter, You are doing great! I can hear you employing more ideas from my lessons all the time. Really good use of BB and Peter Green riffs here. Congrats! Duke

Hi Tony, Sounds really good. Don't worry about playing exactly what I played. That's a guide to the style, you can choose to learn it exact or just pick up ideas from it. I hear the licks from my lesson and I hear you blending them with your own ideas very well. Good job! My only suggestion is to relax a bit on the beat. It can be hard playing to a slow groove but that in itself is a really good thing to learn. Keep up the good work! Duke

Duke,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm just a little frustrated with hitting the panic button too much and heading back to home base. These new licks are starting to sink in, just need to try 'em out more often in the moment.

Well here is a short one with some of these new licks... Mistakes and all...

Thanks,

Steve

Mike, thanks! I really enjoy the tone from just fingers these days, tho you can't pick up speed. duke's lesson on Guitar Watson style really helpeD. I don't use any effects, just direct through my fender blues deluxe.

Hi Steve, I'm sure it will start showing itself before too long. When you feel comfortable it will start coming out. One thing I must point out is its normal not to want to blow a riff but mistKes must be made to improve. Colman Hawkins who wa the creator of the jazz saxophone language used to say " if you didn't make a mistake it's because you weren't trying hard enough." And that's a good thing to remember, going for it and ocassional being a little embarrassed by a few wrong notes is nothing be ashamed of and it's worth it when you find new ideas. So just keep working on the lessons but don't be afraid to make a mistake at jams! That's what they are all about! Duke

Duke,

Thanks for all cool riffs and solos. I've been trying to incorparate these concepts into my live playing but only having some success with it. Seems like when I get into the heat of battle at a jam or gig I tend to revert back to my instinctual "tried and true" playing. The problem is that those licks are starting to become "tired  and repetiive" to me.

I hoping these new concepts will come in their own time and I'll try to not force them before they are second nature to my fingers and headspace.

I love the solo stuff but need the rhythm parts just as much.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Tony ... Wow.  That Tone!!  Love that raw finger sound around 1:50 onward.  It packs a lot of punch!  It's nice how there is a little overdrive / distortion ... but not too much ... so you can here the harmonics / air.

Hi Duke, BB is one of my favorites and the ideas you give in these lessons are truly unique. I agree with you that one needs to go back to the beginnings of an artist to understand his/her style. Your lesson goes way beyond the infamous BB box and does justice to the style of the legendary man.

I tried to take you ideas and blend into my style. Unfortunately it's not exactly the way you played it, I need to work on my phrasing. I combined the backing track and my video after the recording and it was quite a tedious task to match the beats. Still sounds a tiny bit off. Also sorry about the 10sec blank stare in the beginning. Looking forward to your feedback.

Thx. Tony
