Special Rider Blues > B Section & Variations

In this lesson we review the basic riffs of the first two lessons, showing simple variations that will add some flavor. I discuss how to approach the middle or 'B' section of the tune. I slow this part down so that you can hear what is going on. I hope this lesson is useful for you all. Keep practicing!

Hi Corey - some rough spots here but I wanted to get something out to you before I head out today. Peace!

Greetings Doc...from what I hear here, you have a real good handle on it. Remember that when you play the licks that go up the neck, you can still play the low E string.  Listen again closely  to the song and I hope you can hear what I'm talking about.  Thanks for posting.

Thanks Corey. I'll remember that. It's not an effort at all to listen to your lessons but I should get on to the vocals at some point. I'll keep working on it.

@Corey thanks....I do feel much more comfortable now except for the variations!!! :) In the last lesson there's a more recent video where I tried goin to the V to dampen the 4/5/6 strings with the palm....It was before reading your feedback here...I think I also abused of brushes but I Like them a lot....and I've noticed you add, into the brush, even something more...I don't really know how to explain too!! :))

@jdy...your tempo seems a little fast but it sounds good.  I would say only to check for the riff that ends the phrase before you go back to the top...there is a quick pull-off that I think you need to work on.  Thanks for posting and let me know if there is anything else you need help with.

@Corey Hey Mr Harris, just joined Sonic junction and tryin to learn this incredible song from Skip James. But it's a bit hard to get some of the variation and transition when there is no tabs for some of them. WelI in fact i'm a beginner and i really got difficulties to link the different part between them, i'm always afraid to miss a beat or to forget a bass you know. If you made a complete tab is there any way to get it ?

Respect from France ans thanks for this awesome work on that site !

@Alex...nice work it looks like you are feeling comfortable with the song.  I like how you have the strings ringing out.  You might want to try damping if the ringing feels too much to you or if you want to introduce some dynamics.  Nice job though.  Thanks for posting.

@daveja-voo...nice work so far.  I would suggest that you slow down the tempo by maybe a third and use a lighter touch on the strings.  In the B section I don't hear the bass notes.  Are you picking them out with your thumb?  Thanks for posting.

Corey Harris

@jdy...sound like you have it.  I would suggest that when you play the open A string before you go back to the top of the phrase that you let it ring out some instead of choking it. nice work though...thanks for posting!

@Jd you should see my face tryin to play the guitar, sing and put the beat in levare....exspecially in the b section :DD..It's like someone whose raisin 100 kilos...anyway here is my attempt, mon ami!

JD Krooks Crouhy

@Alex haha you add it you want ;)*

@Corey : I've notice i missed the A bass on the main riff just after the pulling off and befor the G bass ! It disapear while practicing, now i play it again ! Try to play the variation now!

Alex Barbera
Alex Barbera Mar 15, 2013

@Jd...try to add, if you like, that beat in levare with the foot...it's literally running me crazy...:)

JD Krooks Crouhy

@Dave : yes, "record" button makes me speed up and playing in  front of an audience too. The thing is to focus before start playing and think of the melody in your head to hear the good tempo and then play. But when i press "record" i don't take few second to breath and focus and i go fast ;)

And your right i learn a lot watching others video because others misstake are also mine. So when i remark something i say "hey i do the same let's work on it" for example i didn't play the brush but when Corey asked Alex to do it, i work on it :) !

@ Mike cheers mate gettting that feed back really gives me encouragement that at least I'm on the right track, you should post yourself playing seeing myself play I've learnt what I'm missing as well as what to focus on as well watching Alex play helped me to get the main riff just the way he holds it you get a good close up of his fingers.

@Alex Cheers for your help

@JD I think your timing is fine but I know what you mean your playing perfect then you press record you heart starts pounding louder and farster than the beat, well done looking forward to seeing your next post

@Alex Thanks Alex :) You're version is great too ! I think this song must be played hundred times to get the good feeling and improvise on it and don't losse the groove. My epiphone is a PR100 from korea i've bought 40euros on ebay. I like it but it stay in my classroom usually but i took it for the hollidays and i can let her in open Em.

@Dave Nice version too ! It's cool to see who guitarist play the b section and the rest :) "Different folks, Different strokes" as i've heard somewhere !

Alex Barbera
Alex Barbera Mar 14, 2013

@Jd....beautifull!!!!! You got a new guitar here, too!!!! It's an epiphone :)

Hello Corey, i've try to post a video faster this time ! i don't know if you've seen the "Keep your lamp" and "Kind Hearted" vdo i've posted last week ? So it's the first time i post a work in progress video. I didn't pay attention to the singing at this time.

The variations on the main riff are not so easy and i'd like to get your choke at the 8m38 on the second video lesson !

I also go to fast but i was nervous for this video. But in fact my tempo speed is a real problem for me. When you work in solo you have to pay more attention to the tempo speed even if you're nervous.

Hope i'll post a more finished version soon :)

Thanks for you help,

cheers

JD

@Mike...thanks!! I don't really like the way I sing...I think my problem isn't to be in pitch or not...it's really how the sound is goin out from the mouth...It's a matter of vocal tecnique..A friend told me some time ago for eample that I sing with the mouth really close....I should take lesson..

I look forward to see your video soon!!!!

Take care!!!

@Corey....I took a look at the lyrics...I swtiched the hole second strophe.....very funny!!!!:DDDD

Hi Dave ... you sounds GREAT !!  Love that B variation.

Hi Alex ... playing and singing is awesome.  I agree, learning some chokes and other right hand techniques would be cool.

Seeing both of you play it is a real inspiration.  I'm still getting the a good flow on the main riff and V chord.
