Corey Harris Lesson >

44 Blues > Lesson 3

In this lesson we cover the importance of a steady bass and getting the rhythm together. Make sure that you are breaking the song up into its parts and then practicing each part until you have it. Then you can stitch it all together. I also introduce a simple riff that should help you to make the song more interesting, and I demonstrate how I sing to the song. Take your time with this. Remember, "the guitar is a jealous mistress." Practice every moment you get until you don't have to think about the song when you play it. Good luck!!

@Corey I was thinkin to play tune 1/2 or 1 tune lower....It's to high for me....I am also lookin for to find the key to play blues in Italian and I discovered that cut the words in Italian instead of singin exacly the way they are it sounds a little bit better...The only problem is that maybe you can understand nothing or at list little of what I'm sayin but as far as I understood it was even hard to understand the lyrics of old blues of the Delta...this is what my american friend told me...

Thanks for your feedback....See you soon!! :))

@Alex...It sounds to me like you have got it.  Good rhythm and tempo.  The only thing that I would say to change would be to play the bass strings with a lighter touch.  Try brushing the strings with your thumb rather than picking them or slapping them.  Of course you can always use an occasional slap or string snap to make the song more dynamic but to do it too much is a little hard on the ears.  Good to hear you singing.  I would suggest you keep singing until it gets comfortable to you.  You might have to change the vocal line over time to make it easier for you.  Listen to all the version of the song and then decide what you like best and what fits best with your voice.  Good luck.

@daddyray...I think that you have a nice version going here.  No need to be nervous, just do your thing and take your time and the change that you want to see will come.  Try singing as often as you can and you will get it.  I dig what Hubert Sumlin is doing with the guitar on the Wolf version and it sounds like you are taking his lead.  Good work.  Thanks for posting.

@ Alex...this sounds nice.  I think you got it.  Now try singing.  Don't worry about how you sound.  I try and follow the example of little children when they play music...they don't worry about how it sounds, they just do it.  Listen to your performance and make liottle adjustments over time to change it if you are not happy with it.  Don't rush it and be kind to yourself.  Thanks for posting.

@ Mike...good to hear you trying to sing.  It's never too late to learn something new.  Do your best to try and play the bass at the same time as you are playing the melody riff instead of alternating.  Think of your thuymb as another player that is accompanying you.  Keep it up!

@Mike...you are the man!!!!! :DDDDD...great video...I like it and I like the timber of your voice which is in my opinion the most important thing for a singer...I mean on the rest we can work on but the timber should be what nature has given to us....There's many white that try to sing like blacks with bad results...We are white and our voice is white..no way..I like how Clapton sings because he doesn't force his voice...mabye sometimes he does but in general I think he doesn't...your timber has a nice colour..really...I'd love to have a deeper timber but unfortunately mine is preatty kind of high...a teacher told me that I'm between baritono and tenore :))

Anyway...no worries...I'm not a singer too..anybody could hear it..So I make a lot of mistakes but doesn't matter.. I can imagine Corey shakin his head and put his hands on his dreadlock and say....but where want to go this white man tryin to play the blues?!?!?!?!!?!?ahahaahahah..just kiddin...

Comunque, We only have to work on it...It's another instrument with a hole range of different sounds that maybe we can't imagine...We have so much potential inexpress...For this reason I make a proposal...Why don't you add a section also for sing the blues...ahahaaha Yes, mabye it's too much!!! :)))

Hi Corey, here's where I am with 44 Blues.   I try to sing on this one.  I'm not a singer at all, but would love to learn.  I know it's probably a long, long road for me ... but hey, every journey starts with one step right?

@Alex .. thanks for the encouragement to sing!  It actually kind of fun.  I have a long way to go, but would be really cool if I could actually learn to sing.

Corey, I know and love Wolf's version best...I think I have him doing it live as well.. I have seen Jody Williams do it around chicago (the band was a mess though) and I like Clapton's version from the blues tour when Andy Newmark was his drummer. That version which is on youtube among other places has a real nice second line feel thing going. One has to do something because only Wolf could sing like that (with all due repsect to Taj and even Sonny Boy who imiitated Wolf at times)......I know the time is rather loose. I truly am a nervous wreck when recording even something this casual.  I didn't even play a full verse since I hate to hear myself after the fact.

I hope your trip is easy and fun (any new turbans?)

cordially,

Rob

@ daddy ray...sounds good. I coulndt see but a few seconds because i am watching on my phone in kigali airport and internet is really slow. You got your own way of doing it. All I would say is to work on your rhythm. Whose version of the tune is your favorite?

Greetings everyone from Kigali Rwanda. I have been here for the last week, playing a festival called Kigali up with Rwandan, Senegalese, Zimbabwean and South African artists. I have learned a lot. I would have written sooner but Internet access has not been very good.  I will answer your messages soon. Thanks!

@Mike...I'm not a singer too!!!! :DD...I try but I should study more and also the pronunciation is a big handicap for me which is normal because english is not my mother language but there's other italians that play the blues and they have a really good pronunciation....I'd love to play some blues in italian but it's really difficoult...it's a big challenge for every italian artist...many have tried but in my humble opinion with very poor results...the lyrics sounded really banal...If I could do something interesting and I'd found an agency that believe in this project I could make a kind of boom in Italy because it would be something new here...but I'm not a genius, a Mozart, Chopin and Corey too...I just like to play something with my guitar, feel better when I do it and hopefully one day have enough skills to share my knowledge with others...I'd love to teach and tell over young peopla that to feel good they don't have to take drugs or drink alcohol...There's something more interesting...This is really important for and it's an aspect which makes a musician a really good musician...

anyway take a look at this guy...he's really good playin the blues..It's not one of my fav but....

@ DaddyRay .. sounds great!  I like your right hand technique ... and the tone of your guitar sounds really good.

@ Alex .. awesome!  I like you're singing on this one ... great to hear you sing!  Alright, I will sing on my next one ... but I warn you, I am not a singer.  That said, there's only way to become one, just do it.  Alex, it would be great to hear you do one of these tunes in Italian.

here is a quick overview of the way I do this one...no disrespect to how Corey does it of course. I have been grabbing phrase here and there out of these lessons to graft onto the tunes I do.
